Julia, a passionate designer, surfer, and explorer, living in Berlin. She has always been drawn to the camera since an early age, being fascinated by its ability to freeze unique and special moments or places. Photography was the main subject in both her apprenticeship and her design studies, making it clear to her that she wanted to work in this industry. She just needs to find her element and develop her own recognisable style.
Before heading to São Tomé, the majority of Julia's work focused on landscapes, architecture, and occasionally people during her travels. However, it never gave her the feeling of "this is it, this is what I would like to do." ~
In October 2023, she packed her bags and embarked on a 4.5-month adventure, immersing herself in the crashing waves of São Tomé and Príncipe, located just north of the equator, off the west coast of Central Africa in the Gulf of Guinea, and its vibrant culture.
Living in the magical surfing village of Santana, she discovered a profound connection with the country and its people. Volunteering with Intervention SOMA Surf, Julia dedicated herself to assisting in teaching the art of surfing to remarkable young girls, capturing their special moments, and sharing her love for the ocean. Despite language barriers, the warm embrace of the Santana community filled her heart with joy and a deep sense of belonging.

Her love for the land extended beyond the waves, as she yearned to capture the essence of this extraordinary place. Through her lens, she celebrated the spirit of surf culture, immortalising the joy and freedom it bestowed upon individuals. Each click of the shutter became a proof of the happiness that danced across their faces, united by their love for the ocean and the strong bonds within their communities. Living and surfing together created a special bond between them, which made it possible to capture the raw beauty of each one of them at their purest.
Not only is she capturing their love and joy for the ocean, she is telling stories about the people she captured, combined with raw videos or pictures out of their daily lifes. She gives her audience the opportunity to get to know the personality behind the photograph - In that way the picture becomes alive.
Now, Julia invites others to join her on a thrilling journey of discovery through her photography. Through the tides of passion and adventure, she explores the untold stories of surfers and their communities, witnessing the profound joy and connection that surfing brings to their lives.
