“Riding the Wave of Change: Documenting the Rise of African Surfing”
Executive Summary
This project, 'Riding the Wave of Change: Documenting the Rise of African Surfing,’ offers a unique and visually compelling journey into the burgeoning surf communities across the African continent. Through powerful documentary photography, videography and storytelling, it will showcase the raw talent, unwavering drive, and cultural significance of surfing for African youth. While simultaneously supporting the vital work of NGOs and Surf Clubs that use surfing as tool to work against gender inequality, support mental health and other social issues, empowering these communities and bringing the vibrant African surf scene to a global audience.
Project Overview: Unveiling Africa's Surfing Potential
This project aims to document the dynamic rise of surfing within various African nations, highlighting its impact on youth development and community building. The focus will extend beyond the sport itself to explore the rich cultural contexts and personal journeys of these emerging surfers. Following the ASC organised Surf competitions across the Continent.
What can be done with the Photographs?
I am to exhibit my work across different countries to raise more awareness about the cultural significance of surfing for African youth, and the wonderful work the Organisations/Institutions are doing within their countries for a better future. While simultaneously giving these extraordinary surfers a platform to be seen and heard. Bringing the vibrant African surf scene to a global audience.
Ultimately, it would be a big dream of mine to publish a book with all the Organisations, different surfers and communities across Africa, with the stories that people want to share.

What are the running costs?
To run a project like this, it needs a lot of logistics and budgeting, as you can imagine. Costs that come along with a trip are like: “Flights, Visas, Insurances, Accommodation, Food, Equipment.”
For the future, I would love to be able to support the wonderful humans who are willing to share their stories with a salary for their time. At the moment, it’s not possible. The aim is to give a percentage back to them as soon as I have been selling some of their prints. Because without these beautiful souls, my work would not be possible.
How can I be part of it?
Whether you are an Organisation / Local Surf Club or a Surfer that would like to work with me, to share your work that you are doing for the youth in your community or your own story. I encourage you to reach out to me, and I would be happy to have a call with you on how we can share your stories together and bring them to life.
If you are a Brand / Company, let’s have a call on how you would like to contribute to my project to keep sharing the rise of African surfing.
