Executive Summary

'Riding the Wave of Change: Documenting the Rise of African Surfing’ offers a unique and visually compelling journey into the burgeoning surf communities across the African continent. Through powerful documentary photography, videography and storytelling, it will showcase the raw talent, unwavering drive, and cultural significance of surfing for African youth.

Project Overview

This project aims to document the dynamic rise of surfing within various African nations, highlighting its impact on youth development and community building. supporting the vital work of NGOs and Surf Clubs that use surfing as a tool to work against gender inequality, support mental health and other social issues, and empower these communities and bring the vibrant African surf scene to a global audience.

The focus will extend beyond the sport itself to explore the rich cultural contexts and personal journeys of these emerging surfers. Following the ASC organised Surf competitions and local competitions across the Continent.

Impact

With these photographs and videos we will:

raise awareness about the cultural significance of surfing for African youth and the organisations and institutions that are working within their communities to create a better future.
Support organisations and institutions with impactful documentation to promote their cause across platforms.
empower surfers from the communities, giving them a platform to be seen and heard, bringing the vibrant African surf scene to a global audience.
